 About John Hicks
(July 10, 1967 - February 24, 2006)
John was a rare individual that stood above the crowd. His kind and gentle nature made him a friend to everyone he met. John loved reporting accomplishments of the people of Ellis County. It didn't matter if he was covering a T-ball game or a high school playoff tournament. He believed everyone he wrote about was special and he worked tirelessly to ensure every organization received the recognition they deserved. In his eyes, they were all champions.
John's passion was evident in his work. An award winning journalist, John received more than a dozen awards from press associations in Texas, including Sports Writer of the Year honors. While proud of his work, John was always low key when praised for his accomplishments. He thought the awards were "cool" but found greater glory in being honored by those he wrote about every day. When one of the booster clubs presented him with a certificate of appreciation, or the baseball league gave him an autographed ball, well, John would walk into the newsroom like a kid on Christmas morning. He loved the citizens of Ellis County.
On both, a personal and professional level, John didn't have to talk about it. He lived it. Every day, with every person he came into contact with, John made a difference.
